This Sunday at St. John’s: Guidance, Struggle, and the Rest Only God Gives

Genesis 24 gives us a story of discernment and trust. Abraham’s servant sets out with a daunting task, finding a future wife for Isaac, and relies on God’s quiet guidance along the way. Rebekah’s response, “I will go,” becomes a moment of courageous openness to God’s unfolding work. It’s a reminder that God often prepares the path long before we recognize it.

Psalm 45 shifts the tone toward blessing and calling. Its imagery of beauty and honour points to the dignity God places on those who step into the roles and responsibilities set before them. It’s a psalm that invites us to see ourselves as part of God’s larger story of faithfulness.

In Romans 7, Paul names the inner conflict we all know too well: wanting to do what is right, yet stumbling. His honesty is refreshing, it’s the spiritual life without varnish. But Paul’s struggle is not the end of the story. It becomes the doorway to grace, pointing us toward the One who rescues us from cycles we cannot break on our own.

Finally, Matthew 11 brings Jesus’ voice of welcome and gentleness. He contrasts the world’s harsh judgments with God’s compassion, and then offers one of Scripture’s most comforting invitations: Come to me, all you that are weary… and I will give you rest. This is not rest as escape, but rest that restores and strengthens us for the life we are called to live.
